Most feed video is watched with the sound off, and video without captions is unusable for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. This tool transcribes speech automatically, gives you an editor to fix the text and timing, and then exports either an SRT file to upload alongside your video or a copy with the captions burned into the picture.

Always correct the transcript

Automatic transcription is good and not perfect. It reliably struggles with names, product names, technical vocabulary, acronyms, overlapping speakers and strong accents — which is to say, exactly the words that carry the meaning in most videos. Reading through and fixing those takes a fraction of the time transcribing from scratch would, and it is the difference between captions that help and captions that mislead. Pay attention to sentence boundaries as well: punctuation is where automatic output most often goes astray, and it changes how a line reads.

SRT file or burned-in captions

An SRT is a separate file the player overlays. Viewers can turn it off, search engines and platforms can read it, and you can fix a typo later without re-encoding. That is the better option for YouTube, Vimeo and your own site. Burned-in captions are part of the picture and cannot be disabled — which is exactly what you want for feeds that autoplay muted and offer no caption control, and for downloads where the SRT would be separated from the video. Some people export both.

Making burned-in captions readable

Two lines at a time is the practical maximum, at roughly 32 to 42 characters per line, held long enough to read comfortably — around 1.5 seconds minimum even for a short phrase. Place them inside the safe area rather than at the very bottom, because phone interfaces cover the lower edge of vertical video with buttons and platform captions. Use a solid or semi-transparent panel behind the text: an outline alone fails the moment the background goes bright.

Should I use an SRT file or burn the captions in?

What languages are supported?

The speech model handles many languages, with accuracy varying by language and audio quality. Clean, close-miked speech transcribes far better than noisy recordings whatever the language.

How many characters should a caption line have?

Around 32 to 42 per line, at most two lines at a time, held for at least 1.5 seconds. Longer or denser than that and viewers cannot finish reading before the line changes.

Can I edit the timing as well as the text?

Yes. Both the wording and the in and out times of each caption are editable before you export the SRT or burn the captions in.
