Removing a background separates the person from whatever is behind them without a green screen, using segmentation rather than colour keying. You get a mask preview to judge the cutout, controls for the edges where it usually goes wrong, and an export with either a transparent background or a replacement behind the subject.

Segmentation instead of chroma key

A chroma key works by colour: everything green disappears. Segmentation works by recognising a person and separating them from the rest of the frame, which is why it functions in an ordinary room with no special setup. The trade-off is that its judgement is approximate where a green screen is exact — edges are softer, and fine detail is harder. It also has to make that judgement on every frame independently, so a mask that is right in one frame can wobble in the next, which shows as a shimmering outline.

Where the cutout struggles

Hair is the classic problem, especially loose or curly hair against a busy background, because strands are thinner than the model can resolve. Fast motion is next: motion-blurred edges have no clear boundary, so the mask has nothing definite to follow. Hands moving toward the camera, objects held up, and clothing close in colour to the wall all cause trouble too. The practical fixes are on the recording side — even lighting, a plain background well separated from the subject, and restrained movement do more than any setting.

Transparent WebM or a replacement background

Exporting with transparency requires a format with an alpha channel, which means WebM — MP4 has no way to store it, so a transparent export in MP4 is not possible. Choose transparent WebM when the video will be composited over something else later, on a website or in an editor. Choose a replacement background when the finished video needs to play anywhere, since the result is an ordinary opaque file. If you need transparency and MP4 compatibility, export both.

Questions, answered

Do I need a green screen?

No. Segmentation identifies the person directly, so it works in an ordinary room. A green screen still gives cleaner edges if you have one, which is what the green screen tool is for.

Why do the edges around hair look rough?

Individual strands are finer than the mask can resolve, particularly against a busy background. Even lighting and a plain wall behind the subject improve it more than any adjustment afterwards.

Can I export with a transparent background?

Yes, as WebM — it supports an alpha channel. MP4 does not, so a transparent MP4 is not possible; use a replacement background for MP4 output.

Why does the cutout flicker between frames?

The mask is computed per frame, so small differences appear as a shimmering edge. Steady lighting, a static camera and less motion all reduce it.

Does this work on video with more than one person?

It can, though crowded frames and overlapping people are harder and produce less reliable edges than a single clearly separated subject.
