AVI dates from the mid-1990s and shows it: no modern codec support to speak of, no proper handling of variable frame rate, and files several times larger than they need to be. It is what old camcorder footage, screen captures and archived clips arrive in. Converting to H.264 MP4 makes them play on current devices and shrinks them dramatically.

Why old AVI files are so large

AVIs commonly hold footage encoded with early codecs — DivX, Xvid, MJPEG, or nothing more than lightly compressed frames — all of which are far behind H.264 in efficiency. Converting an old AVI therefore usually produces a much smaller file with no visible loss, sometimes a fraction of the original size. That makes conversion genuinely worthwhile for archives: a folder of camcorder AVIs turned into MP4 is smaller, plays everywhere, and can actually be edited in current software.

Test a short sample first

Old footage is unpredictable — interlacing, unusual frame rates, non-square pixels and occasional file corruption are all common in material this age. Encoding a short sample before committing to the whole file tells you whether the result looks right, and takes seconds rather than the minutes a full pass costs. Interlacing is the artefact to watch for specifically: fine horizontal combing on moving edges, from footage recorded for CRT displays. If you see it, that footage needs deinterlacing, and no amount of quality setting will hide it.

Will converting my old AVI files make them smaller?
