Every platform wants a different shape: 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 1:1 for feed posts, 16:9 for YouTube and presentations. This tool changes the pixel dimensions of your video to a preset or to exact numbers you type, and previews the framing first so you can see what the new canvas does to your subject before you export.
The presets carry the dimensions each destination actually expects — 1080×1920 for vertical stories and Shorts, 1080×1080 for square feed video, 1920×1080 for standard widescreen. Using the right size matters beyond aesthetics: uploading a mismatched aspect ratio invites the platform to letterbox or auto-crop your video, and the automatic crop rarely picks the part of the frame you would have picked.
Resizing changes the number of pixels; cropping changes which pixels you keep. Turning a 16:9 recording into 9:16 by resizing alone squeezes everything horizontally and looks wrong. If your subject would be distorted or lost, crop to the target aspect ratio first and then resize the crop — that keeps proportions honest. Also remember that scaling up cannot invent detail: a 720p source resized to 1080p is a soft 1080p file, not a sharper one.
Halving both dimensions quarters the pixel count, and encoders reward that with much smaller files at the same perceived quality. When a clip has to fit a strict upload cap, downscaling from 4K to 1080p usually preserves more apparent quality than keeping 4K at a starved bitrate, because compression artifacts on a large canvas are more visible than the missing resolution on a small one.
It will if you pick dimensions with a different aspect ratio than the source and scale to fill them. Match the source ratio, or crop to the target ratio first, to keep people and objects correctly proportioned.
You can set larger dimensions, but no detail is added — the result is an upscaled, softer version at a bigger file size. Upscaling is only worth it when a destination refuses to accept anything below a minimum size.
1080×1920 (9:16 vertical) is the standard for all three. It fills the screen on phones and avoids the platform re-cropping your video for you.
Downscaling almost always does, often dramatically, because there are far fewer pixels to encode. Upscaling makes it larger. Combine downscaling with the compressor when you need to hit a specific size.
