Converting a GIF to MP4 usually cuts the file by 80–95% while making it look better, because a video codec can compress motion between frames and is not stuck with 256 colours. This tool reads the GIF’s own frame timing, lets you adjust the playback rate and framing, and writes an H.264 MP4 that plays and loops on any device.

Why MP4 beats GIF at the same job

A GIF stores every frame as a full palettised image with minimal compression between them. H.264 stores differences, uses full colour, and has hardware decoders on essentially every device. The result is smaller files, no dithering speckle, no colour banding, and less battery burnt on playback. Social platforms have known this for a long time, which is why several of them silently convert uploaded GIFs to video anyway — doing it yourself just means you control the quality.

Frame timing and looping

GIFs specify a delay per frame, sometimes an irregular one, and many were authored with delays so small that players silently clamp them. The converter reads those delays and maps them to a steady video frame rate, and you can override the rate if the source plays too fast or too slow. Looping works differently too: a GIF carries a loop count inside the file, while an MP4 loops because the player was told to. Most feeds and chat apps loop short videos by default; a plain video element needs the `loop` attribute.

Why convert a GIF to MP4 at all?

Size and quality. The same animation as an MP4 is typically a small fraction of the GIF’s size, with full colour instead of 256 and no dithering. It also decodes in hardware, so it is easier on battery.

Will the MP4 still loop?

Looping is up to the player rather than the file. Social feeds and messaging apps loop short videos automatically; on your own site, add the loop attribute to the video element.

Will the animation play at the same speed?

Yes — the GIF’s frame delays are read and mapped to a video frame rate. If the original was authored with unusual delays and looks off, adjust the playback rate before exporting.

Does the MP4 have sound?

No. A GIF has no audio to carry over, so the resulting MP4 is silent. Use the add-audio tool afterwards if you want a soundtrack.

Can I convert a transparent GIF?

MP4 has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with a solid background. If you need transparency preserved, export WebM with an alpha-capable codec instead.
