Which frame rate to target

24 fps is the cinema convention and carries a familiar motion character. 30 fps is the default for phones and most web video in the Americas and Japan. 25 and 50 fps belong to European broadcast, which is why footage from a PAL-region camera can judder in a 30 fps timeline. 60 fps is for gameplay, sport and anything where fast motion needs to stay readable. If you are matching an existing project, copy its rate exactly; if you are publishing to the web, 30 is the safe default.

Why conversion can judder

Frame rate conversion is only clean when one rate divides into the other — 60 to 30 drops every second frame and looks fine, 30 to 60 duplicates each frame and looks the same as the original. Awkward ratios are the problem: 30 into 24 means dropping one frame in five, and 24 into 30 means holding some frames longer than others. That uneven cadence is what people see as judder on slow pans. When you have the choice, convert to a rate that divides evenly, and avoid converting the same clip repeatedly.

What frame rate should I use for the web?

30 fps is the safe default and what phones record. Use 24 for a cinematic feel, and 60 for gameplay or sport where fast motion needs to stay crisp.

Can I increase frame rate to make video smoother?

Not really. Raising the rate duplicates existing frames rather than creating new motion, so the result is the same smoothness in a larger file. Smoothness has to come from the original recording.

Why does my converted video judder?

Because the source and target rates do not divide evenly — 30 to 24, for example, means dropping frames unevenly. Converting between rates that are multiples of each other, such as 60 to 30, avoids it.

Does the audio stay in sync?

Yes. Only the picture cadence changes; the soundtrack keeps its original timing and stays aligned throughout.

Will lowering the frame rate reduce file size?

Yes, usually significantly — halving the frame rate roughly halves the number of frames to encode. It is a good lever when a clip has to fit a strict size cap.
