A hard cut to black at the end of a clip feels unfinished, and a video that starts at full volume on the first frame is jarring. Fades solve both. Set a fade in at the start and a fade out at the end, choose whether each one affects the picture, the sound, or both, and preview the timing on the timeline before exporting.

Picture fades and audio fades are separate

They serve different purposes and often want different lengths. A visual fade from black is a scene-change signal and usually reads best at half a second to a second — much longer feels slow. An audio fade is mostly there to avoid the click of a waveform starting mid-cycle and to let ambience settle, and it often wants to be shorter at the head and longer at the tail. Controlling each independently means you can fade audio up under a picture that is already visible, which is a standard way to start a video without dead air.

Choosing durations that feel right

For social clips, keep fades tight: anything over a second eats attention you cannot spare in a feed. For a talk, a lecture or a long-form video, a one to two second fade out under the last words gives a natural sense of ending. Music is the exception — a track cut off abruptly always sounds like a mistake, so extend the audio fade to cover the last phrase even if the picture has already gone. Preview with sound on; fade lengths that look fine on a timeline often feel wrong in motion.

Questions, answered

Can I fade the audio without fading the picture?

Yes. Picture and sound fades are set separately, so you can hold the image at full brightness while the soundtrack rises or falls — a common way to open and close a video cleanly.

How long should a fade be?

Half a second to one second suits most short clips; one to two seconds suits long-form endings. Music usually wants a longer fade out than speech. Preview it in motion rather than judging by the number.

Can I add a fade in the middle of a video?

This tool shapes fades at the start and the end. For a mid-clip dip, split the video at that point, fade the pieces, and merge them back together.

Does the video fade to black or to transparent?

To black. Standard MP4 and WebM output has no alpha channel, so a fade is a fade toward black rather than toward transparency.

Will fades change the video length?

No. Fades happen within the existing duration rather than adding time, so the exported clip is exactly as long as the source.
