Out-of-sync audio is one of the few flaws viewers notice within seconds. It shows up after screen recording, in streams recorded on the fly, in files converted by other tools, and whenever sound was captured on a separate recorder. This tool slides the soundtrack against the picture, marks reference points, and lets you preview until lips and words line up.

Find a hard sync point first

Nudging blindly while watching a face is slow and unreliable. Look for a moment with a sharp, unambiguous sound and a matching visible event — a clap, a door, a hand hitting a table, a plosive consonant with a clear mouth shape. Line that single moment up and the rest of the clip usually falls into place. Once you are close, judge with lip sync on continuous speech: people detect audio arriving late more easily than early, so if you cannot decide, err very slightly early.

Constant offset or progressive drift

There are two failure modes and they need different fixes. A constant offset is wrong by the same amount all the way through and is exactly what shifting the audio corrects. Progressive drift starts in sync and gets worse — a few frames at one minute, a second at ten — and comes from a sample rate or frame rate mismatch between the two recordings. Shifting cannot fix drift, because whatever you choose is wrong somewhere else; that needs the audio re-timed, or the recording re-exported at a matching rate.

How do I find the right offset quickly?

Find a sharp sound with a visible cause — a clap, a door, a tap on the desk — and align that single moment. The rest of the clip normally follows once that point is right.

My audio starts in sync and drifts out — will this fix it?

No. Progressive drift comes from a sample rate or frame rate mismatch, and shifting the whole track cannot correct it. The audio needs re-timing or re-exporting at a matching rate.

Should the audio be slightly early or slightly late?

Slightly early if you must choose. Viewers detect late audio more readily than early audio, which is why sound arriving a frame ahead is less noticeable than a frame behind.

How precise can the adjustment be?

Adjustment is in milliseconds, well below one frame. Sync errors become noticeable to most viewers somewhere around 40–50 ms of audio delay.

What if I only need to move the audio in one direction?

The delay tool adds silence to push audio later; the advance tool trims the head to pull it earlier. This tool covers both with a preview, which is easier when you do not already know which way it needs to go.
