MKV is a flexible container that can hold several video tracks, many audio languages, subtitles and chapters in one file. That flexibility is why it is common for archives and rips, and why phones, TVs and editors so often refuse it. This tool scans the tracks, lets you choose which ones to keep, and remuxes or converts to MP4.

Choosing tracks is the main decision

A typical MKV can carry one video track, three or four audio tracks in different languages, and several subtitle tracks. MP4 is much less accommodating, so you decide what survives: usually one video track, one audio track in the language you want, and possibly a subtitle track. Getting this wrong is the classic MKV conversion failure — a file that plays perfectly but comes out in the wrong language, because the first audio track was not the one anybody wanted. Read the scan before converting.

Remux when you can, re-encode when you must

If the video inside is already H.264 and the audio is AAC, the streams can be copied straight into an MP4 container without touching the picture. That is a remux: it is fast, often close to instant on a large file, and completely lossless. If the contents are something MP4 does not accept — H.265 in some players, or an audio codec like FLAC or DTS — re-encoding is required, which takes real time and costs a generation of quality. Always take the remux when it is offered.

What happens to subtitles and chapters

MKV subtitles are often image-based, from a disc source, and MP4 has no equivalent for those — the practical options are to drop them or to burn them into the picture. Text subtitles can usually be carried across or extracted as a separate file. Chapters are similar: MP4 supports them, but not every player exposes them, so a converted file can quietly lose the navigation the MKV had. If chapters matter for how the file is used, check the result in the player you actually intend to use.

Can I convert MKV to MP4 without losing quality?

Yes, when the video is already H.264 and the audio is AAC — the streams are copied into a new container without re-encoding. That is fast and completely lossless.

My converted file has the wrong audio language — why?

Because a different audio track was selected than the one you wanted. MKVs commonly carry several languages; check the track scan and choose explicitly before converting.

What happens to the subtitles?

Text subtitles can usually be carried over or extracted separately. Image-based subtitles from disc sources have no MP4 equivalent, so they are either dropped or burned into the picture.

Why does my MKV need re-encoding?

Because something inside is not MP4-compatible — commonly an audio codec such as FLAC or DTS, or a video codec the target profile does not accept. Only the incompatible parts force the re-encode.

Why won’t MKV play on my TV or phone?

MKV support outside computers is inconsistent, even when the codecs inside are ordinary. Repackaging the same streams into MP4 usually makes the file play immediately.
