Reversed stereo channels happen more often than you would expect: cables crossed at the input, a camera that labels its channels unconventionally, a conversion that got the order wrong. The symptom is that things on screen sound like they are on the wrong side. This tool inspects both channels, lets you hear them individually, and exchanges them.

Confirm the problem before swapping

Swapping the wrong way round turns a correct recording into a wrong one, and stereo reversal is not obvious without a reference. Audition each channel on its own and compare against what is visible in the picture: a person standing on the left of the frame should be louder in the left channel, a car passing right to left should move that way in the sound. On music, look for an instrument you can see or otherwise place. Only swap once the evidence actually points one way.

A lossless rearrangement

Swapping channels moves samples from one side to the other without altering a single value, so nothing about the sound itself changes — no level shift, no filtering, no quality cost beyond re-encoding the file. That makes it a safe operation to try: if the result is worse, swap it back and you are exactly where you started. Note that reversed channels are not the same as sound in only one ear, and not the same as a lopsided balance; each of those has its own tool.

How do I know my channels are reversed?

Compare the sound with the picture: a person on the left of frame should be louder on the left, and movement across the screen should move the same way in the sound. Audition each channel alone to be sure.

Does swapping affect audio quality?

No. It rearranges which channel carries which samples without changing any of the values, so the only quality consideration is the file being written anew.

What causes reversed channels?

Crossed cables at the recording input, cameras and interfaces that label channels unconventionally, and occasional conversion errors between formats.

My audio is only in one channel — will swapping help?

No, it just moves the silence to the other side. Use the one-sided audio tool, which copies the working channel to both.

Can I swap channels for only part of the video?

The swap applies to the whole clip. For a problem that only affects a section, split the video, fix that part, and merge it back.
