Front-facing cameras and many webcams record a mirrored image: text reads backwards and people appear on the wrong side of the frame. Flipping reverses the picture horizontally to fix that, or vertically for footage shot through a mirror rig or an inverted mount. Compare against the original side by side before you export so you flip the axis you actually meant.

Horizontal, vertical, or both

A horizontal flip mirrors left and right and is the common fix — it corrects selfie video, un-reverses on-screen text, and makes a person shown at the right of the frame appear at the left. A vertical flip mirrors top and bottom, which almost never happens naturally but shows up with certain drone, microscope and mirror-based setups. Applying both is equivalent to a 180° rotation, so if that is the effect you want, rotate instead — it is easier to reason about later.

The text test

The quickest way to know whether footage is mirrored is to look for writing: a shirt logo, a whiteboard, a street sign, a screen. If any of it reads backwards, the clip needs a horizontal flip. Faces are unreliable evidence — a mirrored face looks entirely normal to almost everyone, including the person in it, which is why so much selfie video is published still reversed. How do I know if my video is mirrored?

Find any text in the frame — a logo, a sign, a screen. If it reads backwards, the video is mirrored horizontally. Faces alone will not tell you, because a mirrored face still looks natural.

Why is my selfie video reversed?

Front-facing cameras preview a mirrored image so it feels like a mirror while you record, and some apps save that mirrored version rather than the true one. A horizontal flip restores it.

What’s the difference between flipping and rotating?

Flipping mirrors the image across an axis, producing a reversed picture. Rotating turns the whole frame without reversing it. Mirrored text needs a flip; a sideways video needs a rotation.

Does flipping reduce quality?

Mirroring rearranges existing pixels exactly, so the operation itself is lossless. Only the re-encode of the output file introduces any loss, and at high quality that is not visible.

Can I flip only part of a video?

No — the flip applies to the whole clip. To flip only a section, split the video, flip the part you need, and merge the pieces back together.
