Screenshotting a paused video gives you your screen, complete with player controls, scaling artefacts and whatever colour management your display applied. Capturing a frame properly extracts the actual pixels at full resolution. Step to the exact moment, crop if you only want part of the picture, and save the frame as PNG or JPG.

Landing on the right frame

The moment you want is often one or two frames away from where a scrub lands, and in fast motion those frames differ a great deal — a blink, a half-formed expression, a hand in the wrong place. Step frame by frame around your target rather than accepting the first pause. Motion blur is the other constraint: it is baked into the recording, so a frame from a fast pan will be soft no matter which one you pick. Choosing a moment when the subject is briefly still is the only real remedy.

PNG or JPG

PNG is lossless. It is the right choice for screen recordings, UI captures, anything with text or line art, and any frame you plan to edit further, because repeated saving never degrades it. JPG is lossy and much smaller, which suits photographic frames destined for a web page, a thumbnail or a document. One caveat worth knowing: a frame extracted from a compressed video already carries that video’s artefacts, so saving as PNG preserves them perfectly rather than removing them.

Why not just take a screenshot?

A screenshot captures your screen, including player chrome and any scaling your display applied. Frame capture extracts the real pixels at the video’s own resolution, which is sharper and clean.

PNG or JPG for the saved frame?

PNG for screen recordings, text, line art and anything you will edit further. JPG for photographic frames going straight onto a web page, where the smaller file matters more.

Why is my captured frame blurry?

Motion blur is recorded into the video and cannot be removed after the fact. Pick a moment when the subject is momentarily still, and step frame by frame to find the sharpest one.

What resolution will the frame be?

The video’s native resolution — 1920×1080 from a 1080p source, 3840×2160 from 4K — unless you crop, which produces a smaller image.

Can I capture several frames at once?
